Sample Answer
With the advent of smart devices and the proliferation of social media platforms, sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have become ubiquitous in everyday life, particularly as tools for social and political discourse. It has been claimed that this development benefits society. However, I strongly disagree with this assumption as it leads to the spread of misinformation and contributes to online abuse.
To begin, social media sites allow individuals to spread unsubstantiated opinions and facts that run counter to established scientific research. Facebook, for instance, has become an echo chamber for conspiracy theorists and anti-intellectuals who refuse to trust accepted science on issues including the environment, vaccinations, and the shape of the Earth. Flat earthers, for instance, use social media to share videos, studies, and photos to support their claim that the world is flat. While their evidence rarely holds up under scrutiny, the freedom offered by these sites allows it to be presented as fact, thus perpetuating their erroneous viewpoint. So, while social media allows the freedom to express any view, it greatly reduces the quality of information presented.
Furthermore, social media sites have become platforms for bullying, racism, and other forms of discrimination. By allowing members of these sites to post anonymously without having to face their interlocutors, some social media users verbally abuse others because of their race, gender, or political views. Often, they do this just for fun, an act known as ‘trolling’. In some countries like South Korea, this bullying has even led to high-profiles suicides. Additionally, in the UK and USA, it has contributed to political polarization. Although social media allows people to connect with people from all over the world, anonymity can lead to bigotry and abuse.
In conclusion, political and social discourse on social media is not a positive development for society. It spreads false information and leads to online abuse and bullying. If social media use remains unregulated, it will lead to greater political polarization and have a negative effect on people’s mental health and wellbeing.
