Sample Answer
With the advent of globalization and more affordable international travel, certain parts of the world have become popular with travelers and tourists. To take financial advantage of the influx of tourists, some places have developed substantial tourism industries. While such developments have benefits to the local economy, there are also drawbacks to the local culture and environment.
The primary advantages of a tourism-based economy are the increased opportunities for individual wealth and economic growth. Tourism benefits a number of different businesses including hotels and short-let accommodation, restaurants and bars, and travel. Not only do these businesses make more money but often receive government investment. This, in turn, creates employment opportunities for skilled and unskilled workers who might otherwise struggle to find employment. Take Vietnam as an example, following the conflict between the north and the south, the country was left impoverished. However, owing to its beautiful countryside and beaches, the country has benefited greatly from international tourism.
On the other hand, tourism often impacts the local area in a number of negative ways. To begin, local land is often developed quickly, building hotels and restaurants to meet the growing demand from tourists. This can have a detrimental impact on the environment by creating more pollution, destroying countryside, and ruining the habitats of local wildlife. Additionally, tourism is often accompanied by westernization as international tourists expect amenities and service similar to that in their own country. Consequently, many shops, markets, eateries, and houses that reflect the traditional culture, may be replaced by western-friendly alternatives.
In summary, while a tourism-based economy provides opportunities for wealth and employment, it can also negatively impact the surrounding areas on a cultural and environmental level.
