Question 6 of 10
6. Question
Sample Answer
Many modern societies claim to support egalitarian values. However, in recent years, increasing economic disparity between society’s wealthiest and poorest has been witnessed in many parts of the world. Two of the main causes of this is the increasing cost of living and economic liberalism. This can be addressed through taxation for public services and increasing people’s salaries.
Economic policies have greatly affected the wealth gap. A move towards economic liberalism and free market economies has reduced taxation of the rich and led to the defunding or privatization of many essential services. Take health care in the US for instance. Unlike countries that fund this service through taxation, people in the US have to buy private health care plans and pay for medical treatments. As a result, serious illnesses or even pregnancies, present a series burden and threaten the financial security of low-income families.
To address this issue, governments need to implement economic policies that assist the poor and redistribute wealth. Taxation policies that target the rich would allow wealth to be redistributed in the form of welfare programmes and social services that reduce the financial strain faced by the less affluent. Consider higher education, if it were funded through taxation of high-earners and free to low-income families, not only would it be a significant financial relief but it would also provide opportunities for social mobility, thus diminishing the wealth gap further.
In conclusion, the gap between the rich and the poor is a problem caused by free market politics, and an increasing cost of living. The best way to tackle this problem is through taxation of the wealthy, and investing in public services.
